One of the most important in poker that is most overlooked is good bankroll management, most people play in limits that are too high for they're bankroll which usually end up in them losing they're entire bankroll. Below are some good guide lines to follow for good bankroll management.

Limit Holdem - 250 times the big blind is a good place to start so if you want to play $.50 $1.00 no limit holdem you should have a bankroll of at least $250 and myself I like to go the conservative route and would say 500 times the big blind.

No Limit holdem - 20 times the tables max buy in is good so if the tables max buy in is $50 it would be nice to have a $100 bankroll this may seem like a lot but you'd be surprised what a few days of bad beats will do to your bankroll.

Sit N Go - 35 entry fees is the minimum I'd go with and 50 entry fees just to be a little conservative so if you play $10 sit and goes you want to have anywhere from $350 to $500

Multi table Tournament - Anywhere from 75 to 100 entry fees is good the reason this one is so high is kind of obveious, you can go many tournament without reaching the money so its nice to have many times the buy in fee and for $10 multi table tournaments you want to have anywhere from $750 to $1000.
